Her work endeavors to shed light on current dynamics of race and ethnicity in the United States within a larger world-historical context. She holds a joint doctorate in Historical Studies and Sociology from the New School as well as an M.A. in Liberal Studies. She was an assistant professor of the African Diaspora and the Atlantic World at Virginia State University from 2004 to 2011. She is currently working on a second book, Imagining Communities in Black and White.
