David Coyoca is an Assistant Professor in the English Department and the Director of the American Studies Distinguished Majors Program. He has decades of experience working for various departments, programs, and support services designed to assist undergraduate and graduate students of color. Before moving to UVA, he worked for the Latina/Latino Studies Department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign as the department’s Writing Specialist. He also taught several courses for Latina/Latino Studies, including Introduction to Latinx Literature, Contemporary Latinx Literature, Literatures of Displacement and Migration, and the Politics of Hip Hop. While at the University of California, San Diego, Coyoca taught undergraduate classes focused on diversity and justice.

At the University of Virginia, Coyoca will be offering courses in literature and popular culture for English, Writing and Rhetoric, and American Studies.
